Realstone works, Via Gelia, Derbyshire March 09

These are situated next to the road from Cromford to Bonsall in Derbyshire (don't know the name of the road, sorry) Access is easy, you can just just drive in but this did pose some issues, I will explain later...

The largest building, in great condition, as if everyone just left, they probably did.

Ok, I said I will tell you more about what happened: When we drove in, there were a load of chavvy types making a lot of banging sounds, we were naturally cautious, as we were walking round, they ambushed us, we were in the larger building, and they jumped through the doors screaming. There were 8 of them and two of us, and we both had expensive cameras (and I had a pickaxe handle :)) we explained we were just taking photos and meant no harm and they were quite friendly, they were apparently photographing their car and we could go and look at it if we wanted. we went to the building in which their car was situated, and the stink of weed was overpowering and there was a burst water pipe, when we went out, they were eying up our car and throwing stones at the buildings. They didn't hurt us or nick our cameras, only because they were high!

That looks interesting. A few different sized buildings, I like it. Funnily enough, me, Mendo and the little one were driving around that area yesterday lol. (trying to keep her occupied and away from people cos she's got the Chicken Pox lol).

There were quite a few cars in the area with people and expensive camera's yesterday, must have been the day for it, all descending on the peaks lol.

Cheers,

:) Sal

An interesting site. The mixing tanks remind me of Steetley in Hartlepool :)

This is the former Realstone works in the Via Gelia. They made reconstituted stone for building facing, fireplaces etc. The place looks even more stripped out and trashed than when I visited about 18 months ago.

Nice man. That lime mixing tank is good. What did the water in it taste like?:)

I just spotted this thread. Is it Dursley Mill on the Via Gellia? If so, DCC have just granted planning permission to turn it into a waste recycling plant. It is to be for animal carcasses. At a SSSI, heritage site on a dangerous bend of a notorious road, with the possibility of polluting a water course which flows under Cromford. Well, that sounds a good plan to me!:arghh: We did the protests etc but to no avail.

Nice report mate sounds like and interesting time...

good photo`s aswell

I always went by the rule of taking kids to play with others that have chicken pox...it`s harmless if you get it when you are young but can be nasty if you are older...ask my mum :)

It is near there, it used to be owed by Realstone and there is still quite a bit of fake stone there.
Burning animal carcasses next to a main road?!!!
