These Gasometers have been redundant for as long as I can remember. They were built in 1884 or at least it said so on the Steel plate on the side. I loved the decaying grandeur and Metalwork some of which was quite ornate.:)

this was a weird one with stairs leading to nothing.

this shot made me dizzy!

I was wondering how many Rivetts it took to hold this together!

Love these! Love the workmanship and attention to detail that went into building them.
Great to see them, Black. :)
Yeah and now they stand as a testament to our ingenuity. Seems in Victorian Times there was so much pride put into the workmanship. To be honest with you Foxy I do not know why there are still standing, what with the price of scrap being up. Do you think these are Cast Iron or steel.?

I was wondering the same earlier, as I'm sure there can't be too many left standing now. I'm glad these are.
I'm guessing...and it's only a guess, mind...that they'd be cast iron. Only because they look like it and because of the time they were made. The design reminds me of Victorian lamp posts, in a way. :)

They have been in the same sort of state for as long as I can remember. Honestly thought someone would have been trying to hack bits off and sell it here and there. It would be a massive job to try and bring them down coz of all the Iron work. Just best to leave them the way they are.:)

Nice one

Black,I love the last shot...I think these tanks are floating on water, and sink more or less to ground level when empty,so overnight, they take in gas to be stored for the next days usage, then they go down etc etc..interesting thread too

Thanks a lot Chelle. I guess I was testing out my new Finepix! I have always liked these Gasometers in my town and used to stand in awe of them when Iwas a nipper.:)

Oh, yes. The ones by St. Pancreas are definitely still there. I can think of others in Watford, Battersea and Wood Green, London. There used to be one near my local park until about ten or twelve years ago. I wish I'd taken a photograph now.

I really like gas holders, The framework will be cast iron sections riveted together. The scrap price of cast will be nothing once you factor in the cost of decontaminating the site. Its not like its made of copper!

Yes it was an old one . there was a date on the side saying 1884. The Fuji is good although I am not a photographer by any means I am still trying to find my way around it! but yeah it is fun.:)

they must look pretty smart all painted up. An attempt to blend them into the landscape.!

I should imagine it would take an eternity to decontaminate a site like this. Probably why they are still standing then?
