This is part of the Western Heights complex at Dover and is connected to the Heavy Artillery Battery at the Citadel (see separate report). It seems to be a bit bigger than the only other AA site I've explored (at Worms Heath), as several of the gun pits are connected by large-ish bunkhouse type buildings. If anyone can shed any light on these that would be good.
When you first approach the site from the Citadel Battery (most of which, like Farthingloe, is on public access land) you first see the one story building in the pictures below. This has been well and truly "chavved" , but from its appearance I suspect it is actually a mess building which served both here and the Citadel. I say this because it is like the mess buildings at the Lydden Spout Battery .
The battery itself is fairly standard AA stuff, though I noticed there aren't the big switchgear rooms at the back of each pit like there were at Worms Heath.
The "bunkhouse" type buildings which connect the pits are below. They obviously had stoves in them, as there are vent holes in the roof of each one.
At the back of the complex there is also another pillbox which looks as if it was the command post
If you walk west away from the battery and down the hill a bit you come to a triangulation pillar, and from here you can get a good view of the Hougham Battery and Fortress (see Digital Noise's report). Unfortunately the fog was a bit bad the day I went, but you should be able to make out its outline in the pic below.
Around the site, there are other bits remaining of what was a large complex, but I have no idea what these were for. Answers on a postcard please!
On the way down, I had a good view over the Western part of Dover, despite the fog rolling in. If you've ever heard Bruce Springsteen's "My Hometown" you'll get some idea how I felt taking this picture.
Anyway, enjoy the pics
