Default Fan Bay Deep level Shelter Dover Sep 09

    Hi All

We the last port of call on our 3 day Dover tour ended at Fan bay, again this was a coastal gun battery much like the one at South Foreland.
The gun pits have been filled and the magazines have been covered over, but more of them in a later post.

This post will look at the deep level air raid shelter only as it is very large, the main entrance shaft together with the main passage measure 140 feet in length.

It is difficult to explain the overall plan of the shelter but there is a very good plan on the under ground Kent web site
    ( www.undergroundkent.co.uk/fanbayplan01.jpg)

Just a word of warning, parts of this place are a death trap, the roof is held up with 60+ year old railway sleepers, there are many roof falls.

There are NO steps down in to the shelter only a 90 foot long 45deg chalk slope and when it gets wet It will be like ice. (The steps start after this)

    So on with the pictures.......
    Enjoy

Ok now for some of the more dodgy sections

Well that's it for Fan Bay, to tell the truth I didn't take that many pictures of the shelter as I just wanted to get the hell out.

Thanks for looking there are a few more pictures at http://www.flickr.com/photos/newage2...7622278325473/

    Any comments are most welcome

    Cheers Newage
