My first 'report', so please be gentle!

Went for a wander around RAF Croft the other day, so thought I'd share a few pics. It's not the first time we've been there, cos it's not far from home!

There are about 40 pics in my photobucket gallery linky

but here's a small selection of my favourite ones...

First view of the complex as you come in from the road..

And the sign over the door... it had 'Catering Section' painted in red, originally, and then Galley overpainted in white.

This was a strange room, lighting-wise

the old car is still there... peeking down the corridor

I like the colours and textures on this pic

The old cinema / theatre

It's a large complex!

there's a lot to it, to be honest... a real maze, room after room! my OH went up on the roof, and there are even more rooms up there.
we found rooms this time we'd missed completely the time before, lol.....

Gentle it is then...I really like the look of this place, and am now going Googling to find it..nice pics too.

Nice one there. I love RAF Blocks, we have loads over here in Norfolk. American Bomber Bases too. Welcome by the way.:)

RAF Croft

Hi Mate

Nice set of pics, love old air bases.

Did a bit of research for you if thats OK.

RAF Croft in Yorkshire
opened in 1941 and was closed in 1946, it was part of Bomber command
Formation 6 RCAF Grp, it was an operational base not a training base.
It had 3 runways 085,026 and 145 they were all standard width at 50 yards, 085 was 2000 yards and the other 2 were 1400 yards each but they were later extended to 2500 and 2000 yards.

The Accommodation was temp (thin walled brick).
Hangars T2 X 2, B1 X 1
Hard standings for 36 bombers.

RCAF:- officers-199
SNCO's - 425
Other ranks 1018
WAAF:- officers 6
WAAF SNCO's 4
WAAF Other ranks 240

Total 1892

Hope that helps
Newage

thanks for doing the research, but this Croft is in Cheshire, near Warrington, so must be a different one !!

I've heard it referred to as RAF Croft, RAF Littletown, HMS Aeriel and HMS Gosling

It was used as a USAF transit camp, fed from Burtonwood.

Found a lot more info about it here... http://www.rafburtonwood.org/croft.html and here http://www.mywarrington.me.uk/raf_burtonwood.htm although they contain a lot more about Burtonwood itself than about Croft...

PS, thanks for the welcomes ;)

Newage I thunk the one you are talking about is now Croft racing circuit and was a satellite station of RAF Middleton-st-George which is now Teeside (or Durham Tees Valley as its been renamed) airport

It's not a bad place to visit. The roof is worth looking at for a bit of WW2 graffiti etched into the concrete.

Excellent pics of a good place Miss Kitty. I enjoyed it when me and ThenewMendoza visited the place. Is the old till still there? had fun trying to get a clear pic of it when I had the film camera.

Good work, and welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy it here. :)

:) Sal

The old till had gone when we went also the chair in the cinema had been burnt out. :(. we did see them in an early visit back in summer, but we never had chance to explore it because some Chav's turned up.
