This disused firing range is sat in a sheltered valley to the west of Wolstonbury Hill, about 5 miles north of Brighton. I first visited here 2 years ago and my photos werent great (the sun went behind the hill and it was like turning a light off!)
I dont know the history of it but I have read unconfirmed reports of it being used by the Home guard in ww2.

the range from the firing point, the target area is just under the bushes to the right, a second shorter target area is on the left but its only visible by a bank

I think your semi buried shelter was probably the magazine. There was an almost identical range close to where I grew up but it was cleared long ago. By the old chalk pit to the east of Harmer Green, near Tewin, in case anyone's interested.
 
I think the shelter is just a shelter for the guys working the target mechanisms whilst firing was in progress. If there was a magazine it would have been at the firing point end.

I think you're right, there were foundations for a few buildings at the firing point so the magazine was most likely there
