Originally a wellington bomber site in the second world war, RAF Newton was then used as an RAF training school for the following 50 years until it's closure in 1996.

From 1996 - 2000 it was used as a home for the East Midlands Universities Air Squadron, but this was not cost effective and the base was decomissioned and shut in 2000.

The site was extensive, housing large numbers of RAF trainees and comprises of flying school with hangars, barracks for the trainees, officers mess, cinema, control tower, parade ground and housing for officers.

More recently some of the hangars were used for regional heats of Robot Wars, and since the proposed development of an immigrant/asylum camp was turned down, the site is now due to be converted into office and industrial space.

I visited this site last week. We first entered from the entrance on the A46, which is noticably derelict. There is an opening gate, absolutely no trouble to enter. There are several houses, some of which are open, but fairly uninteresting. A little further in there is a large, relatively undamaged building, which would appear to be the officer's mess. There is a section of tree-lined road before you reach a social building on the right. At that point my partner wanted to turn back because she saw someone working on a lorry in the distance.

We then drove up to the entrance in Newton village. What looked like Armed Forces housing is all occupied. At this end there is a manned gate. I was able to get brief access after asking the guard. It seems some of the buildings are in use - the hangars particularly. Some of the hardstanding is being used as a coach depot too. There are plenty of buildings to look around, I was unable to look at most of them due to lack of time, including unfortunately the control tower.

We then drove up to the edge of the airfield the other side of the village. However, all I could see was a pile of root vegetables amongst the mist. All that seemed to be left was a ploughed field.

hey...RAF newton is a fantastic place...love it, underground blast shelters, officers mess, underground nightclub...isolation hospital rooms, water towers, control tower, 4-5 huge hangars (3 still in use i think)

Ive visted this place today, and although very erriely empty, it was exciting.
We started by parking in the lay by just before the main entrance, the path walks behind all the main houses and from behind all the buildings was the most exciting. We managed to get into 'air house' as somebody had kindly broken a window, apart form that we couldn't really go in anywhere else, again we were scared off by a man in a van..
untouched by vandals, apart from the odd beer can and graffitti. An intersteing insite to a forgotten 'city'.
Loved it. Ruth

yep its a good site and i've been twice, just hide from the man in hte van it adds to the fun ;) we got caught by him on our 1st visit and he just asked us to leave!
