Originally a wellington bomber site in the second world war, RAF Newton was then used as an RAF training school for the following 50 years until it's closure in 1996.
From 1996 - 2000 it was used as a home for the East Midlands Universities Air Squadron, but this was not cost effective and the base was decomissioned and shut in 2000.
The site was extensive, housing large numbers of RAF trainees and comprises of flying school with hangars, barracks for the trainees, officers mess, cinema, control tower, parade ground and housing for officers.
More recently some of the hangars were used for regional heats of Robot Wars, and since the proposed development of an immigrant/asylum camp was turned down, the site is now due to be converted into office and industrial space.
