My first UrbEx was to go and have a look at the local Grafton Underwood and the 384th bomber squadron site.

Found the Ops room and also managed to get round the back and see the old "aircon" units.
Basically heat exchangers for the air filtration and fans.

Wandered up and had a look round the Ablutions block as well as a few of the samller bits in the wood.

Then went over to have a look at the pillboxes and stantons in the airfield and got caught twice by farmers and told to move on.:icon_evil So didnt manage them but i will go back after dark one night and have a poke around.

Few pics of the Opr room and aircon units.

Those are the three Porton Filters for scrubbing any poison gases out of the air when the block was running in anti-gas mode.
Names after Porton Down where they were developed, they consist of a casing holding a number of seperate cylindrical filters, which can be seen in the first photo, similar to those in WWII personal respirators (blue and/or white asbestos).
Outside air was drawn in through the larger of the two stacks on the roof to keep it above the level of most of the gas, which was heavier-than-air. The other stack is the boiler chimmney.

All the best,
PB

Nice start but what don't you go and ask the farmers in question first if you can have a look at the pillboxes, they tend to get shitty whe you don't and then go wandering all over their land. If you explain what your doing they tend to be more amicable but don't say your an urbexer.

Thanks for the info P Bellamy thought what i was told was wrong and it makes more sense than aircon in 1945!!

Also i think i may pop in and see the farmer next time i pass and ask if he would let me take a peek.
He can only say no.

I do wonder when farmers are going to get wise to the fact that there are a large number of people "documenting" the same things for the same project. ;)

Good start mate, as other have said, you can always ask permission, they can only say no !

Nice photos but farmers get twitchy about groups of uninvited persons on there land. Scrap metal is always a target. Keep chipping away and possibly go out alone if need be. Welcome to the military section. We need more input.

I once visited a ROC post on a farm, I had to press a intercom at the gate to get to speak to the landowner, I knew sub brit had visited the post some years back so I said I was from sub brit and Nick catford had sent me along to get some up to date pics, it was worth a shot and worked, got in and got some nice pics lol

sometimes a little creative BS opens doors.:)

Almost, if not all of the remains of GU are on private land so getting caught there will only stir things up locally!

As PB has already mentioned, the filters are FULL of asbestos so I hope you didn't disturb too much in there ;)

Good point. If I was a farmer and I saw someone wandering around my land without asking first, I think I'd be telling them to move on as well...
