Hay folks... well as I had a few hours spare before I started work so I thought I would visit my old friend RAF Grafton Underwood for a nice relaxed solo explore well not a lot has changed since my last visit last year but as the winter months are here and hardly any leaves on the trees she gives up a few more of her secrets.
Now the ops room seams to be used for party’s and raves as there is now a carpet of beer cans and drink bottles scatted all over the place which is such a shame to think only 70 years ago it played a big part in helping to win the war with organising bombing missions and such the like.
Now there is still a few little treats to see in the airfield part of the airbase but is very much a working farm so I did not venture to far on to the airfield as the farmer really gets upset over trespassers and there was a lot of rumbling of farm machinery around so I will save that for another day.
For those who have not yet seen or herd about RAF Grafton Underwood please check out my archive report from last year for some old photos and history

What you have marked as a machine gun emplacement is an ordinary trig pillar, the thread on top is for mounting a survey instrument (theodolite)

Thank you very much for the info just googled it very interesting indeed cheers mate

It simply says Commanding Officer underneath.

They are the stumps of the steel water tower for the site.
Immediately post-war there was an OS trig point on the top of the tower, as it provided a good field of view. When the tower was removed the concrete trig pillar at ground level replaced it. The same thing happened at Deenethorpe, which also has a concrete trig pillar close to the footings of the long-gone water tower.

All the best,
PB
