Arrow Alton Towers Air Raid Shelters

Whilst exploring the many terraced levels of the valley gardens at Alton Towers, I noticed a small entrance heading under the Glasshouses. On closer investigation, and without a torch (it was a sunny day after all!), I saw this.............

I'm guessing that these were originally for wine and / or garden stores?
    Anyway, thanks for looking! :)

It's about a ten minute walk from the Buildings & rides, located in the valley gardens. See the below aeriel (a bit rough, but hopefully you'll get the idea.
The entrance is about 30 feet down on the terrace below the Glasshouses.
Looking at the blocked-up brickwork at the furthest point in, perhaps it went even further underground?

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
