The Western Heights forts were built to protect Dover from the French threat. It was armed more heavily on the land side to protect from internal invasion.

St Martins Battery

The Grand Shaft.
This is a fantastic piece of engineering. Three separate stair wells, running independently of each other. It was designed so the the public, soldiers and officers could each go from top to bottom without passing one another.

Thanks for these, I'm currently working on a masterplan for the Western Heights - so it's very useful to see the current condition of some of the prime assets.
