Default Western Heights, Dover Dec 13

The Western Heights forts were built to protect Dover from the French threat. It was armed more heavily on the land side to protect from internal invasion.

    Drop Redoubt

    St Martins Battery

    The Grand Shaft.
This is a fantastic piece of engineering. Three separate stair wells, running independently of each other. It was designed so the the public, soldiers and officers could each go from top to bottom without passing one another.

Thanks for these, I'm currently working on a masterplan for the Western Heights - so it's very useful to see the current condition of some of the prime assets.

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
