RAF Thorpe Abbott's (100th Bomb Group) - September 2015

RAF Thorpe Abbott's was an American Airfield during the second world war, It was used by the 100th Bombardment Group from 1943 until the end of 1945.

During the early days, the 100th Bomb Group used it's efforts against airfields in France and Germany. The 100th BG received a Distinguished Unit Citation for seriously disrupting German fighter plane production involving an attack on an aircraft factory at Regensburg on August 1943. The group completed a series of attacks against Berlin in March 1944 and received a second Distinguished Unit Citation for the missions. The 100th Bomb Group then got the French Croix de guerre with Palm for attacking heavily defended installations in Germany and for dropping supplies to French Forces of the Interior.

The 100 BG flew its last mission of World War II on 10 April 1945. After the war, the airfield used by the RAF on the 27 June 1946, due to the lack of use, Thorpe Abbotts closed in 1956

Two T-2 hangars were built, one on the east side of the flying field and one on the south side adjacent to the technical site. This and several of the domestic sites were in woodland south of the airfield. There are several remaining buildings around the sites today.

Nicely done and a good bit of history as well.

Nice report dauntless..I spent all afternoon mooching around here..I loved the bhq..it's quite a rare one too.because it is places above ground level.did you find the lone orlit hut.

Thanks, I'm afraid I didn't have enough time to do everything on that visit, I'll return soon then get some black and white shots from my camera with the missed off bits.
