The purpose of the building was to accommodate pilots and their engineers close to their aircraft. It was part of a ‘rapid response unit’ to guard us against the Ruskies during the cold war.

There’s no chance of getting in through manholes… Every one within a few hundred meters of this building was locked down…

It featured all of the other high secca features you’d expect from hardened cold war facilities, and lots of concrete.

As they would have to spend long stretches of time here (I think a shift was 7 days) there was a canteen. The prices are quite telling of a ’93-’94 closure!

Yes, [it] was all dollars the same as other American bases.

Excellent though you would have though they would provide the meals free for being at work like that

The basic three meals a day were provided in the base canteens. The photos illustrate the Cold War equivalent of the WW11 NAAFI establishments that provided sustenance and a none military diet outside the set military meal times.
