Part of a weekend's trip with Dick Derpin (f.k.a. Prickly_buzz).

The 'STANK Rally 2K16: Terrible Roadside Eateries Tour

The whole excursion came to be for a number of reasons - lack of serious action since Konrad left, local sites dried up, me moving abroad in less than 2 weeks and the fact we hadn't taken the FIESTANK (f.k.a. DD's Nan's car) on a proper road trip.

We'd originally planned to do 3 or 4 sites, but distances and some dreadful traffic on the M25 and M4 seriously limited our time to actually explore. We'd also planned on spending night 1 of 2 stealth camping in a nature reserve, but had to ditch this plan because it would take more precious time parking up somewhere safe and walking, etc, so we decided to just softie camp at nearby camp sites. This proved to be a good call as we appreciated the facilities and it was rather lulzy seeing all the lifestyler's reactions to the FIESTANK!

Well after a couple of fails, which included some very ungraceful SRT and getting covered in anti-climb paint, we finally got something done!

Tons of history about online for this place - I think just about every Urbexer who's visited Wales has been here at some point. In a nutshell it was built as a bomb store for the RAF. Shortly after it was built (mere months), the slate covered roof collapsed. Much of the area was used as a bomb dump, even the neighbouring pits which eventually had to be cleared out after it was revealed they were full of ordnance well after the war had ended!

Inside the FIESTANK, looking rather out of shape, on the way to a derp. Big up them spongey old brakes and that cable clutch! Negotiating the meandering mountain roads in this thing was...interesting. I think we irritated a lot of holiday makers as we crawled up the hills :p

Outside. This is where the slate roof would have covered the store.

Obviously some attempts were made to secure the site, to no avail. There are a fair few steel doors and plates about with holes cut in them. I think just about every local Taff and passing Tourist has been in here for a spray up.

Entering inside. You can see the channel for railway carts on the right.

Thanks to DD for supplying the vehicle and providing good company as usual. It was our first splore trip to Wales and I think we'll be back again ASAP for some underground stuff. Video to follow shortly...

Thanks for looking!

Nice One Jim, the last pic was good, explore done time to relax grab some grub and plan the next trip, Loved it, Thanks

It was a bloody good weekender, just over way too quickly! My gunt is also slightly larger than yours in that first shot....not that i'm bragging :(
Everyone was surprised the car even made the 800 odd mile round trip (including me to be honest) especially as we bottomed it out on several occasions trying to climb to the camping spot we had picked at the top of the hill up the dodgy slate track (might see that on the video :p)

Anyways here's some of my shots (tried to pick slightly different shots to what SJ has shown)

Methinks I should have taken photos when he went through...the brief moment when there were just two legs waggling about in the air was quite comical!

Too fat, too tired, too short on time. Was our last port of call before a 6 hour drive. Wrecked myself the previous day on a perilous one too - knees were bruised up something fierce. Will do it next time, if i revisit with Konrad :p Might abseil down the cliff into the compound too, that could be fun!
