Hi All

Only a short report on this site as there ain`t much to see any more.
This is whats left of Grain dummy battery located to the south of Grain land fort.

When built its guns covered across the Medway to Sheerness.
Built in 1865 to cover the other forts in the area, the battery was used on and off right up to WW2 when it was used as a site for AA guns.

Only a few pictures...............

looking at the now exposed magazine.

Inside the magazine looking at the shell racks, these are most likely WW2 anti aircraft storage ammo racks.

This might be another magazine or crew shelter.

The last shot is the steps leading up to the gun emplacements.

That's in a sorry state. Not long until it collapses by the look of it. :(

Yeah, they really pushed the self destruct button when they removed all that earth and mucked about with the place in the 50's. Shame really; as fortifications like this are the only structures that show us how our forefathers set about defending this country from invasion over the years - from the threat by troops from the sea in the early 1900's via submarines in WW1 to the Multiple AA defences of WW11. There is the evidence writ in concrete and stone for everybody to see. Many of the smaller coastal land based structures and certainly most inland AA defences have long gone under the bulldozer of progress. Those that one can see are mostly associated with old aerodromes, some of which are now commercial fields, i.e. Leeds Bradford Airport has a nice scattering in the surrounding fields. However the AA sites set up to defend important commercial towns and cities, that people of my age wandered around in their childhood, have long since disappeared under tarmac and bricks.
