The History

Victoria House located on the interestingly named Shooter’s Hill in Greenwich is the former officer’s mess and living quarters for the Royal Army Medical Corps. It is classed as a "Building of Local Architectural or Historic Interest"

The building was constructed in the classical style in 1909. It became the officers' mess and living quarters for the Royal Army Medical Corps staff employed at the Royal Herbert Hospital. The Ministry of Defence sold the building as part of Project MoDEL in June 2013 and, although it was originally planned that the building would be converted into a 75 bedroom residential care home, the building is now being converted for use as the Primary School element of Greenwich Free School.

The grand entrance hall for the officers of the Royal Army Medical Corps is easily the most impressive part of the building. It is a well-proportioned room, with some elegant iron work on the balcony. On the floor, in mosaic tiles, is the cap badge of the RAMC which depicts “the Rod of Asclepius, surmounted by a crown, enclosed within a laurel wreath, with the regimental motto In Arduis Fidelis, translated as “Faithful in Adversity” in a scroll beneath”.

The Explore

Whilst having a weekend of Essex and London hospitals with @Lowri Jen Bate and @Katia we stumbled across this. Hangovers gone and our heads almost clear Myself and Katia noticed this and the same time and it made way to one of the dodgiest U-turns that the posh Greenwich suburb has even seen. After what seemed like an eternity we found somewhere to abandon the Urbus and headed towards this amazing looking building.

Once we made our way back to the outer fence of the building we were met by a strange old lady.
She can only be described as a mixture of Cruella de Vil and the child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
She barked at us that if we went inside we would be faced with Ghurkhas who would cut off our knackers amongst other things, @Katia took offense to this as SHE claimed not to have any knackers lol. We slowly walked away from what appeared to be the local looney only for her to follow us and repeat her warnings.

Hmmm this was fun.

Eventually we lost her and made our way into the site, keeping our eyes open for knacker removing Ghurkhas, although I don’t know why the girls were worried as I possessed the only set between the three of us lol
We made our way into the building to find it pretty much stripped with the only part being worth looking at being the already mentioned entrance hall and balcony. The exterior was pretty nice and at some point it will make a great school. It served its purpose to us as a place to stop between other places and we made our way elsewhere, Knackers still intact

Nice, but hard to see how a school can survive here when all other schools are moving out of heritage buildings because they cost so much to maintain!

I've driven past here a few times and wondered if it was anything interesting. A few nice bits inside at least. Good work!

One of the things I miss most now I'm not nosing about much is, The Interesting People you get to meet, sound job, MR loved it, Thanks

That's a nice building and you were right about the frontage, its magnificent. I was a patient at Royal Herbert Hospital in 1963 so the doctors who treated me probably stayed here. Oh, please remember those Gurkhas carry large Kukris.

I tend to find Gurkas ok if you are polite lol

Definitely of local historic interest this, love the mosaic "Faithful in Adversity" a regimental motto...I just googled it, I'm not that smart, Dirus Strictus is a bit late in mentioning it thats all, tut tut.
