    Default Dungeness No.1 Battery -- September 2018

Dungeness No.1 Battery was a small triangular fort that was first built in 1798, and then upgraded in 1860. It originally mounted 5 24-pdr cannons. It mounted 1 7-inch breech loading gun and 4 68-pdrs when it was rebuilt.
The only part of the fort that remains is the (very overgrown) front, with the gun mountings.

Battery No.2 is now a private residence, and Batteries No.3 and No.4 were destroyed by the tide in the 1820's.

For the answer to what the metal plate in the wall is have a look at pictures 1 and 4 in the original starter on this link

    No1 Battery Dungeness

It seems that the original information plate has either been nicked or taken for safekeeping somewhere else

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
