Unsure about the useage of this one, resembles some buildings found near ROC Posts. Couple of theory's, including that it was a gun mount and early warning for the barrow shipyards (Sure I don't need to say how important they were during the war!). Another theory is, it was simply a decoy trying to distract enemy bombers away from more important targets.

Floor was covered in what looked to be very deep water with algae growing on it so didn't go inside as I had good pants on!

Sorry for stupidly large amount of images, just going through my archives!

Thanks,
David.

right i just had a look at the ww2 plug in for google maps nowt on it there it looks like there is plenty of pill boxes in the area. to me that could be some kind of fire control or airraid shelter

The thing with the Air-raid shelter is it's a good couple of miles away from ANYTHING remotley inhabited, so seems a bit pointless having it in the middle of no-where. Not sure if I'm allowed to post a map to show the location but will if given the green light.

i cant see any issue with maps for this tbh it might help work out the useage of it i guess it might be a day shelter for AA guns that where not fixed prehaps

There's a dozen of something near identical to these in Ashbourne in Derbyshire however are covered in Earth and in woodland. My aunt took me on walks to them alot and we called them the 'air raid shelters'.

I could be way out as this is just a theory, but seeing that entrance reminds me of an ammo store...in fact the way it's constructed looks similar to one. And looking at the map, I'm wondering if it was part of a coastal defence battery to defend an area which could have been easy or vulnerable to be landed on. Just a thought! :)

looks similar to starfish decoy bunker . the bunker controled a number of decoy devices , designed to lure german bombers away from vital instaltions and towns using patterns of ligys , fire pots ect

As I've said I'm really not sure mate, Just found it whilst exploring the island in my 'fender and thought it was worth a look!

Hi David,

What you've got there is Wylock marsh QL control bunker (decoy lighting) the site was also used as an SF site (starfish) but this used a smaller bunker which I have never found. This is one of 4 "N series" sites built for the Navy around Barrow Shipyard.

its a starlight generator bunker. the genset and system would have been controlled from there. it lights up made up streets or air strip lights/markers in fields away from the actual industry and homes, but not so far that bombers would rule it out as being an incorrect location.

we got 2 more of them up the west coast @ maryport and allonby
