I lived in Whitby for 4 Years and din't know this place exsisted. However I was in Whitby recently to see some friends and go on a few explores.

Apologies in advance for lack of photos or arty exposures, wind was blowing offshore between force 6 and 7 (42-50mph) and if I let go of the tri-pod if would have been blown away. Drizzel has also rouined some of them.

This is Goldsborough Rotor bunker. It's a small single level bunker. At one time this would have been a very secret place, desquised as an ordinary family bungalow. It now lies forgotten in ruins.

It was in good condition about 5 years ago but then the guardhouse was trashed and set alight. Some of it remains and the bunker was sealed up untill recently. I woudn't expect the average chav to think it's anything more than just an 'abandoned house' but it seems the've worked out the floor is hollow (the hatch may have been revealed in the fire) and part of it has been broken away by force. The entrance stairwell/tunnel and subsiquent bunker complex is unfortunatly flooded.

The best photo I could get by tri-poding the camera through that hole on self-timer. The wall and ceiling covering is the same to that found in other ROTOR bunkers and ROC HQs, this leades me to belive this is the entrance stairwell/tunnel entrance. You may also notice that the water level has been higher than current.

Good find matey, but more visits and more photos, and I cant for the life of me work out that last pic.

And just looking up some info, it says Goldsborough is an R2 bunker, not an R1 bunker. ;)

The site today is in private ownership and all surface structures have been removed. The R2 structure is extensively contaminated with asbestos, lacks all secondary flooring and is completely flooded. The guardhouse which has in recent years been used as a hostel is now derelict and open. All entrances into the R2 structure are, for the moment, sealed.

I put the last statement in bold, because it made me giggle

I somehow doubt that the hatch you have found is the entrance to the bunker. If its similar to the other Rotor bunkers then it'll be in the square structure thats on the back of the main building, and it won't be a hatch, it'll be a staircase leading down to a tunnel. In the staircase will be a shaft and an electric winch for getting equipment down there.

This is an entrance from an R3 bunker

I dout it too but I've been to 3 rotor bunkers, an R2 and R3 and an R4 and all of the guardhouses were different. The above photos of the interior were taken at the back of the house where the square bit was. In the same location that stairwell is inside the guardehouse in the above picture. That top door (not the double doors) you see is in the same place, but it differes for then on.

I've been to Goldsorough and I would agree that the entrance is under the hatch pictured, although the Rotor bunker stairwell is normally open there isnt an open area on this bungalow, this is the most open area. It appears they put a floor in over it, probably not when it was in RAF use but later as the guardhouse has been used as a Youth Hostel.
