The Royal Naval Armaments Depot was established in 1939 at Newton Noyes as part of the rapid re armaments program in the prelude to WWII, it was intialy intened to supply mine layers and act as a bast for escort vessels. The fall of france in 1940 meant that convoys were routed further north and the haven was no longer sutable as a base for escort vessels.

During the cold war the base served as a supply base for destoryers and would rearm ships birthed at its jetty before exercise or deployment. The base also held a wide range of other stores. the paint store still has its labeld shelves, Black for decorative trim, Mid Green Decks and railings ect. Most of the buildings are trashed not one pane of glass is intact. But the 12 or so wepons storage tunnels which have mostly been well sealed, are almost imaculate.

RNAD Milford.

Would the "Static discharge room" be the clean/dirty changeing room where the magazine clothing would be changed?
(Felt overboots/ pocketless overalls etc).

The white divider looks familiar.

Ive been meaning to go down here for ages, but still havent got round to it, even though its only a couple of miles away, i will soon though.Good work. Thanks for the pics.

This looks like a very interesting site. It is very untouched (apart from the windows!) and I particularly like the signeage. Many features in here remind me of other sites I have visited. Thanks for posting this. :)

Dumpty, you have to go there. Don't go too far out onto the jetty though, very creaky!!

Everytime I go home to Ma's, always find time to have a walk down the Depot

You can easily spend the whole day on the site and not see all of it and it's not too far from Marble Hall chippy:wink:

Cool report sinnerman and thanks for the historical info on your site

Mmmmmm...Marble Hall Chippy, We used to walk from the Comp.,passed the air-raid shelter by westhill just to get our chips. Those air-raid shelters have now gone to make way for the new houses of Skomer Drive.
Ive been down the depot many times when i was a kid, but thats when they still used it for stuff. Im goin down(with no dates mentioned)very soon! I'll be lookin forward to it!!!!

Remember those shelters, one in really good nick and the other with the collapsed roof. Shame they have gone, because they really do need to build more new houses in Milford

Do you remember the Air Raid Wardens shelter in the corner of Milford United field opposite the chippy?

Showing my age now, but when I went to school it was known as the Grammar school and I left in 85 !!

Have to drop you a pm next time I come home
