Llanberis RAF Reserve Depot (Bomb Store) January 2008. Pic heavy

I expect most of you know about this if not.

Llanberis bomb store. Built in the Glynrhonwy slate quarry which closed in 1930. Storage for 18,000 tons of bombs. Same design as Harper Hill.

40 feet of broken slate was on top to pretect the store. But two-thirds of the structure collapsed under the weight of the overlaying backfill. Baring this in mind, this place must have been realy big.

More info.

After parking the car and checking the GPS we set of on our quest. The first thing we saw was some very big holes.

I know some may say this place has been done before etc etc but what the hell mate.
Its always great to see someone elses photos of it and its a great place anyways!.
I read years ago somewhere that the place was more or less full of bombs/ammo etc when it collapsed .....there must have been one helluva holy mess to clear up with all the slate trimmings and waste down on top of all the bombs and the collapsed concrete!!!!!!!!
Sounds a great job to have to sort that lot out !
The thing was the guys who cleared it all and sorted it out obviously weren't that fussy and dumped loads of the collapsed material including christ knows how much ordnance into some of those deep lakes in the surrounding quarries......after the war ended another load was also dumped into them as an easy way of getting rid of some of the thousands of tons left over........
this meant though that many years after the war (around the 1970s I think) the government had to pay for a serious clean up of the whole area.........the Royal Engineers removed literally hundreds of tons of explosives from the area so its supposed to be safe there now and there's supposedly nowt left ..........bet there is though:lol: ....
....somewhere:lol:............just a bit ??????
gotta be a bit left somewhere.... somewhere in one of those old lakes or under some slate rubble !!
heheheh!......... Get the metal detecters out !:)

This is great, EWJ. There was a very brief explore shown on here ages ago, but the pics were taken at night and not much of it was shown. Good to see the various interiors...I didn't realise there was a train station and tunnel there. Love the lift and the OMG tunnel.
Thanks for posting. :)

I'm so gutted to have climbed most of the way up that bloody hill and never even realised this was there. The next time we do the 5 hour journey Im not missing it!

ooh it looks very cool there. It's the first report I've seen of the place, I enjoyed it, thank you

I had family in both nant peris and llanberis and have walked in that area countless times. How did I miss this?

The OMG tunnel is indeed OMG. When I go back I'm definitely having a look see.

I've done that twice now
Uh oh!
I was blinkered byDolbadarn castle and the Dinorwic quarry works. I did see a sign to say there was another quarry (this one) but as it didn't say anything about the bomb store I thought nowt of it. After climbing Snowdon the day before I hardly felt like walking any more than was necessary!!!

Thats mental! I have never seen a report from here, dont know how I missed them. The underground stuff is brill...wish I lived a bit nearer!
