I've had my eye on this place for quite a while now and decided to pay a visit. The site is quite large and has been heavily vandalised. Lots of it's very similar in design, the H Block style bunk houses for example.

In the rubble and chav damage a few nice things remain, the social club, bar and dance stages are fairly cool as is the original admin block with its asylum like corridors and rooms. In fact, you could almost be in one of the asylums it's so similar.

There is a great history of the place here, but basically it opened in 1936, saw several different uses and was then sold off as surplus in 2007. It now seems to have been totally abandoned to its fate, another victim of the crashed property market and the credit crunch.

Thanks for looking.

Excellent report, some really good pictures!

The "Admin" building you refer to is actually originally the Officers Mess

Is the rocking chair still in the squash court?

Good to see some more pics from here, really like the place, and have been back a couple of times. as you say, parts of it do have a very 'asylum like' look.
Did you see the Raleigh shopper bike, and rubber bullets dotted around the site?

Is the rocking chair still in the squash court?

it IS, and getting closer to the ceiling every day!

r.e. rubber bullets, they're brown right, if you find one with a yellow section on the base what does that mean?

Rubber bullets

The rubber bullets are actually the rounds from baton rounds used by Police Firearms officers, the Police used to train up there for firearms and also PSU (riot) training as well until they moved to a different site years ago. There is no specific reason for yellow marked ones as far as I know, I believe it just distinguishes one round from the millions of others. Ie an instructor or suspects.

Some nice shots there, is that sofa still hanging out of the 1st floor NAAFI window?
