Good old Newage posted his slant on this a little while ago,so now its my turn.The problem is there is just so much to post so i thouught i'd do it bit by bit so to speak !!! So here is part 1---Archway 63 to the wartime S&T (signals and telegraph) training area. !!
Archway 63 runs from the lower level of the stn forcourt (opposite Bristol and Exeter House) to probably under the central and western ends of plats 5 and 7 and is a fasinating explore !!
Here is the view inside Arch 63 looking back to the entrance.This part of the tunnel is used by staff to store their bikes etc whilst on duty !!
Now the view looking into the passageway.Notice the opening to the LHS,this leads to the S&T area.
Looking back again with the entrance now to the right.
Now into the first of the two adjacent arches,this has a section of track laid for training purposes and has gained a false ceiling at sometime using corrugated tin.It has also become the dumping ground for many of the enamel lamp shades removed from the stn probably during the 1960's.Most of which are still in excellent condition.
Into the second arch now and you are instantly greeted with this surreal sight.Presumably a mock up ground frame and mess area for the trainees.
Looking back from the ground frame at the track and general dumping ground for old railway electrical equipment.
Inside the Ground frame/messroom which is collapsing,is filled with track tools and obsolete electrical gear.Even the mugs from that very last tea-break remain.
Turning left as you leave the Ground Frame leads you to a short passageway which leads thru an arch into two larger stores areas.
This is the larger of the two and still contains many rusting tools of the trade.!!!
Looking the other way shows the entrance to the smaller store both are absolutely littered with tools etc.
Lastly a rusting heavy duty hook and an absolutely huge old searchlight await events !!
