As some people may know I attempted to do this site when I first started exploring, but was unable to find access to the site at the time. I revisited recently with new confidence etc. The site is in brilliant condition, although I needed to do some climbing to get down to the actual station. It's above Highgate station on the Northern line and all that remains is the station buildings and platforms. I hope you enjoy the pictures :).

The History

Highgate Upper Station was opened in 1867, it had two lines serving the station. It was shut for good in 1954. For a full hsitory you can visit http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/h...te/index.shtml.

Interesting, that's actually much less derelict than it used to be 30 years ago when I knew it. Back then you could walk from Finsbury Park (where I lived) along what is now the "parkway walk" all the way to this station, which involved going through a tunnel!

In fact you could go further - into the tunnel to the north and in here the track started. The end of the tunnel was fenced off and beyond that were lines still in use.

But back then the station was pretty trashed, all the glass had gone and there were no lights. Also the track beds were empty, it looks like they've been filled in with something now.

If you go into the station building, there are stairs down to the underground station and back then you could get all the way to the other side of the locked folding gate in the station, which caused some bewildered looks from travelers.

Great find and pics :) . I lived a few hundred yards from there in the late 1960's and I never knew that station was there. :(

That is interesting to hear, it's in very good condition and as one of the pictures shows is now used to store equipment. The platform is covered on one side although it was unclear why. It's well worth a visit if your in the area :). Also thank-you for the comments :).

Nice stuff! Funny how people living right by that didn't know it was there. I imagine there's lots of tunnels in London like that.
When I lived in Highgate in the late 1960's I had other things on my mind than exploring derelict places, had just got married, the first time, (rather stupidly) at the tender age of 19  and was also into tuning Mini's.
However as a kid ten years or so earlier, and living a few miles further south, I do remember the railway line in question going out of passenger service and can remember exploring the abandoned station at Hornsey Rise, just down the line from Highgate, and seeing a goods train trundle through the station while we were nosing around. (that station looks like it may have been redeveloped now, looking at Google Earth).
