In the strictest sense of the word this isn't a true 'explore' because it is limited to exterior photos, but it is still a derelict structure so worthy of inclusion I feel. It is also somewhere I had wanted to see for absolutely ages, it only took me seven trips to New York to finally get around to hoofing it way over the other side of the borough of Queens in order to see it.

In 1964 New York City played host to it's third World's Fair, located in an area of Queens known as Flushing Meadows. It was intended as a giant showcase of technology, innovation and man's achievements through a theme of 'peace through understanding'. In a way unlike all other World's Fairs at cities prior and after, it was more like a giant consumer show due to recent advents in technology and all the new products being brought to market. Honestly I could spend hours talking about the 1964 World's Fair, it's a point in time I really, really wish I could go back and experience for myself and I do try and search out relics and items and brochures from mid-century World's Fairs when I'm in the States. There is a whole load more information out there to be read - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_New_York_World's_Fair is obviously a good start point.

After the fair ended, the vast majority of the buildings and pavilions were dismantled or demolished. A couple found alternate uses and the land which once housed the fair became known as Corona Park and is now open to the public with the iconic Unisphere fountain the centrepiece - with the New York State Pavilion towering over it in the background.

The pavilion is sadly locked up tight so there is no way in, but it's such an incredible structure you don't really need to see inside to appreciate it. It's a wonderful vision of the future from 1964.
