Although not very high, the tower does hold some nice views over Piccadily and surrounding area.

Love the little crowns on the roof.

Please, please explain the crowns, Lb. Looked it up in my architecture dictionary and looked at crown and crown-posts but can't see anything that seems to fit the description. Then again, I can't really envisage either description, so what do I know, eh?

Nice pics Emily, although I do admit to being helplessly acrophobic, so a bit toe-curling for me.

Cheers :)

Lovley building! nice pics thanks!,hope the building is not going to be buldozed. To many are being demolished in the wake of"progress"

Cheers Emily,

Nice views over Piccadily. Did you have a look around the rest of the building? or are there builders in there?

Hi Foxy,

Just found this bit of info regarding the building. The building is joined onto the Coroner's Court, Police and Fire station, it also formerly housed a bank.

Info got from here.

Hope that helps a little regarding the crowns.

Cheers,

:) Sal

Oh don't worry, it's not going to be demolished! Most likely it will be converted into something possibly a hotel/ art convention i've heard.

Yeah I had a look at the rest of the building it is very beautiful inside, with an inner courtyard with a metal staircase leading to the floors i'll add some more pictures. The only area I didn't manage to see is the old police cells because the door was nailed shut!

Here's a picture showing the courtyard

It's pretty cool as well as most of the rooms have the original 70's wallpaper on

The old drying room

Wooden carvings in what I presume was the old courtroom (this is on street level, and you can actually see people walking past without a clue to you being there!)

I assume Lb's reffering to the terracotta crown on the top of the dome? (second and third pictures).

Dave

yes, just found this as well.

In February 2006 a private company called Argent, developers of nearby Piccadilly, published plans to transform the 100,000 sq ft of usable space in the building into a music and arts venue. There would be a 100-bed hotel and a mix of other uses each taking up about 5-10,000 sq ft: recording studios, private club, music academy and archive. The city council has since backed the plans. The building's owner, hotelier Alex Langsam, has proposed to revamp the landmark to include an hotel, offices for his company and a fire station museum. A stand off, almost certainly ending in a compulsory purchase order, now seems likely.

found it here.

Cheers Dave, I didn't notice those. The ridges of the roof itself has uprights which I was beginning to think were the crown-posts according to the description in the book...the truth is much simpler, however.

Cheers for the link Sal. No mention of crowns unfortunately, but lots of good info about the statues. An amazing building indeed.

Emily, I love those other pics you've posted up. Some beautiful woodcarving and I love the pic of the window with that lovely brickwork.
:)
