Though it was never technically an abbey - it was just a name given to it in the early 1800's - it spent most of the 20th century as a nursing home run by a Roman Catholic order of monks.
Various reports put it's final date of closing between 1988 and 1991, depending on who you listen to.
It has however, been derelict for the best part of 20 years - amazing when you consider it's location and the fact that just the land alone must be worth millions of pounds.
The reason is a series of planning applications that have been variously queried, rejected, amended, re-submitted, and generally mangled through the bureaucratic process for years - a fact not likely to be helped by the fact that the Office of the Mayor of London has now joined in to add to the confusion.
The building is now suffering badly after two decades of decay and neglect and is unsafe in many ways. The only photo's I've got are of the exteriors and outbuildings of what was once a completely self-sufficient manor house.
