Though it was never technically an abbey - it was just a name given to it in the early 1800's - it spent most of the 20th century as a nursing home run by a Roman Catholic order of monks.

Various reports put it's final date of closing between 1988 and 1991, depending on who you listen to.

It has however, been derelict for the best part of 20 years - amazing when you consider it's location and the fact that just the land alone must be worth millions of pounds.

The reason is a series of planning applications that have been variously queried, rejected, amended, re-submitted, and generally mangled through the bureaucratic process for years - a fact not likely to be helped by the fact that the Office of the Mayor of London has now joined in to add to the confusion.

The building is now suffering badly after two decades of decay and neglect and is unsafe in many ways. The only photo's I've got are of the exteriors and outbuildings of what was once a completely self-sufficient manor house.

Pics of our wander around can be found at Gathering Dust

Even people I know who live locally are largely unaware of it's existance, hiding behind the hoardings of the main road into Hanger Lane...

Just thought this may have been of interest?
I grew up in West Twyford and went to the primary school close by. When growing up we always believed the manor house to be inhabited by a witch or haunted by ghosts, due to the gothic design of the building I guess?
Anyway, when we (me and friends) were a little older we decided that we had to find out for ourselves, so during half term we went. I can't remember exactly when this was, other than it being 1993.
We made our way in (unfortunately I can't say how) and came upon a gravel path thru bushes leading up to the drive and to the house. We walked up to the house and peered thru the windows and saw what had to have been about 10 or 15 Chinese people. Anyway, scared coz we'd been seen we ran away. After about a half hour or so and still buzzing off the adrenalin, we dared ourselves to go back. As we made our way back thru the bushes two of the men jumped out from behind trees and chased us. Me and a mate ran up to the newly built housing estate and hid and the other six in the group ran towards the north circular shops. Needless to say, for a building that was supposed to be derelict, I don't think they should have been there!! One of those things growing up that you never forget, tho to be honest I would have loved to have seen inside.
