Quote 'bus was registered on the 1st of October 1965 and at its last MOT in 2016 had only covered 71,000 Miles. Hardly run in!' Quote.
For a service bus registered in Oct '65, I personally doubt the 71,000 miles is the true total mileage - The odometer has probably passed the 100,000 mile indicator more than once in the vehicle's service life.
The 71,000 miles is accurate. When I was there at the weekend I checked the hub odometer on the rear wheel and it was just a few miles over 71k.
The bus garage was used for an art exhibition space show thing after it closed, and the Routemaster was brought in then - most likely with much of the graffiti on it already. Inside are leftover bits and pieces of whatever tosh they were showing stuck to the ceiling etc.
This Routemaster CUV 296C is actually quite a famous bus in certain circles as it was used as the basis of many small scale model Routemasters produced by companies like EFE, you can find models of this very bus with the CUV 296C plate from back when it was in service.
I like the rest didn't expect to see a bus, it would be great to see it running and back on the road.
Nice report Mockney.
