This weekend has been a good one for tieing up loose ends, finaly getting access to the Newport Technical Insitute / Art College, Have visited the site 2 or 3 times over the last year and always been denied either by nosey neighbours or resident druggies. Luckly work has begun to protect the building from the elements and it has become a little more accessable. It was a great trip today comedy moments on entry and exit. The building itself is fantastic. Mosaic floors and half hight glazed tiled walls in all the public areas, loads of great architectural details and masses of light makes it a very photogenic place must have been a wonderful building back in its prime.

The building opened as the Newport Techincal Instiute in 1910, it later became part of the expanded Gwent Colledge and developed into the home of the School of Art and Design, The Newport School of Art was one of the first Schools to be awarded degree status in 1963 and enjoyed a excellent reputation in painting and sculpture throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Former students include Joe Strummer of the Clash.

I love to see pics from here, and love the mosiac tiles on the floor and the wall tiles. Love the lecture hall, with the tiers. Funnily enough, a few people have been here this weekend, and Mendo and I still haven't got around to seeing it yet. Definitely on the cards for next time we're in Wales. (hopefully in the not too distant future :) )

Excellent pics,

:) Sal

This is a really lovely building. Those staircases and hallways are very grand in design! Nice one! :)

Yes the place is very nice, sort of not the same after spending all the time in there now that we have access tot he keys of the place. But I must say in all the last three years that I have spent at least one night a week in there I have never seen drugies in there.

Dunno about anyone else, but I want that building for Christmas.

"Dear Santa...."

I'm afraid I've already emailed him and he's confirmed it'll be under my tree on the 25th...

What an amazing find! Fantastic structure, almost feels like it's sighing - such magnificence, yet understated in age... Simply stunning!

Hey Sinnerman - please drop me a PM if you are visiting here again any time soon and if you wouldn't object to another Newportonian accompanying ya! Would love to investigate before the opportunity goes completely.

Dont think i'll be going back anytime soon, a leg injury means i'm pretty much out of things for the time being. Try dropping sheep2405 a line he's based in Newport and has been able to arrange visits to the college in the past.

Wow, quick reply... cheers. Very sorry to read about your leg, ouch!

I have just replied to a thread that Sheep has replied in so hopefully he will receive a notification. I can't seem to be able to get at PM's to send him one? Maybe it's because I have only just signed up and I don't have privileges just yet.

Would be great to have some photo opportunities of the Art college though, I remember it well.

Newport Art Collage

I would love to see some more photos on how work has progressed on my old Art Collage. Also of any other parts of the building that You or Sheep have not taken.

I was there 1974 to 1978. It was thriving then!!! I admire the work you folk do...some wonderful photographs all over the country. My favourite site!!

B:)
