For those of you who have driven around up near Richborough (and from the stuff on the site about the Power Station, I know thats quite a few!) you might have come across the following ruins running over the road up to Richborough Castle. This is one of the last remaining bits of the Tilmanstone- Sandwich section of the East Kent Light Railway, which was built to haul coal from the Kent Coalfield up to the port at Sandwich during the 19th century. Part of that line (the bit from Shepherdswell to Eythorne) was reopened about 15 years ago as a heritage railway (not bad, but not as good as some others I could mention in the Kent area). These columns were part of a bridge that took the EKLR over the main line between Sandwich and Minster and as you can see a lot of the trackbed is still visible on one side. Not much to look at now, but a good reminder that Kent was once such an important coalfield that they built railways (and of course power stations!) because of it.
