The fortres was build by the Dutch around 1800. Belgium became the owner after their independence in 1830. The site is 30 acres and about 3000 soldiers used the barracks. During the first and second WW it became a prison of the German occupier and in that period they build a tunnelsystem underneath it. After the second WW the Americans used it as a military hospital and since 1980 the fort is abandoned.
