these gasmasks were packed into the first room i entered in School No 3 (i think it was) - they are nothing to do with the 1986 incident at all, all schools in USSR kept gas masks for the schoolchildren in anticipation of attack from the West, and these were kept under lock and key in the basement. After the evacuation of the city looters came in and took the masks and stripped them down, taking only a valuable metal / foil element in the respiratory system of the mask, casting the rest aside.

Now that is desperation, I wonder how many have radiation sickness from being there.
 
This post is amazing. I've allways wanted to visit this place ever since I started taking an interest in derelict building. The history behind it is also of fasination although very sad. Its amazing to see these images, Thanks for sharing.
