I came across this Chateau hunting. It has all the hall marks of a posh middle class farm house with a large dry pond or swimming pool in the garden by the road. I love the optimism in the tiny Propriete Privee defense d'entrier sign. A bit like a sticking plaster on a shotgun wound.

Depending on when this place was built and by whom, your 'pond' could have been for keeping live fish for the dining table. Nice find and at one time that small notice would have done its intended job - funny how everything changes over time.
