Default General Malta dereliction, December 2016

Round-up post of from my recent Maltese jaunt where I have a few pictures of this and a few pictures of that but not enough for an individual report.

    1. Fort St.Elmo
The majority of this fort in Valletta has been restored and opening to the public. However some of it is still very much 'as was' and off limits. Managed to sneak into the bit where you shouldn't be before getting moved on!

    2. Lazzaretto Hospital, Manoel Island
On the small island of Manoel and in the shadow of the recently restored but private fort of the same name, this place looked really interesting. Reccied it out from the island but sadly was a no go. It is a former quarantine hospital, built in 1643 to replace an earlier hospital that was built wholly of wood. In the British period, the Lazzaretto continued to be used and was enlarged during the governorship of Sir Henry Bouverie in 1837 and 1838. It was briefly used to house troops but was converted back into a hospital in 1871. During the course of the 19th century, some incoming mail was fumigated and disinfected at the Profumo Office of the hospital to prevent the spread of diseases. The Lazzaretto is scheduled to be restored, but restoring the hospital will not be easy since it had extensive damage over the years especially in the Second World War. More info on its future here: Restoration of Lazaretto

    3. Old Houses in Kalkara
Malta and the environs of Valletta in particular have their fair share of abandoned houses. Most are locked up tight awaiting redevelopment, refurbishment or demolition.

Very nice set of images. Spent a year on the Island from Jan '61. Should point out that damage at that time, to the Lazaretto building, seemed far less than it appeared to be on a return visit some 16 years ago. Even with the incomplete repairs to the war-time damage seen in '61, it was obvious that this complex had been allowed to further decay over the ensuing years. Shame really, because it is one hell of a site when in use.

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
