The Double D Tour

Visited with Dick Derpin.

We made a promise to ourselves about getting back here after we went last time and didn't even see half of it. I think we managed to see the rest of it within an afternoon or so. It's incredible how time flies, especially when you've been on the road and yomping around East German woodland for 3 days looking for stuff. I have to say it was well worth getting back, despite the fact we couldn't get into the underground parts (well and truly sealed at the moment). The murals were worth seeing in themselves, however.

What can I say about the place? Well, it's going - quick! It's basically wrecked, past it and more of it is being smashed up day-by-day. Demolition crews were there and considering that in it's heyday it had 500 buildings, I'd say that there are only a few dozen of the larger ones left now. It's still a massive site though and I haven't done one this big in a long time. It does kind of remind me of a sort of shoddy Soviet Upwood and it obviously sees a lot of explorer traffic. We even saw some Euro City Slicker types in their loud coloured chinos walking around, but they didn't last long when the rain started coming down and they scarpered back to their Merc C200 Kompressor.

We were sniffing around the ammo storage area and found a load of these little buried buildings.

Lots of sealed doors...Not only is there earth, but they seem to be welded shut from the other side too.

The murals are the best bit.

Soviet art at it's finest and most ideological.

I will turn out a short video sooner or later of our weekend's mooching.

To conclude, it's a real shame it's all going down the tubes. The German's seem to enjoy white-washing the past, when they can get away with it. Fair enough, it was a crap time in history for them, but it's important to remember and preserve the crap, as well as the good  I had a great weekend though and a much needed break from life in Poland. Big ups to DD for dropping by and putting up with all the faffing about in airports, etc.

Thanks for looking,

SJ.

I don't think they want folk getting in Jim, an improvement on not wanting folk getting out, I enjoyed it, Thanks

Was a blindin weekend, plenty of class cold war concrete, having beers with the only German named 'Pat', attempting to eat a sticky toffee pudding ration pack on the roof of a derp, looking suspicious or stupid at security in the airport as im the only non-Pole there and after 20+ miles of walking i am nakard!

Heres a few of my better shots from Vogelsang anyway...

Ah yes "Pat" and his "I will have an alcohol free beer with you" attitude, cryptic facial expressions and tales of Fiesta crashing. That pudding was pure stodge though. Big up the little plastic men at the airport. Good times.

Getting used to it :) I wish I was getting out as much as I did in the UK though! It's like being a n00b all over again when you move to another country. I'm ok with that, but mostly the problem is there's time, but no one to get out with or help you research.
