I know this isn't an explore as such but it's such a gem of a place to visit I thought I'd put some photo's up anyway. If you like abandoned places/history and are anywhere near Philadelphia then please stop by ESP. You won't regret it. You just pay your monies pick up the audio guide and off you go, free to wander take photos of this un restored prison. Oh and Steve Buscemi does the audio tour which is a nice touch.

Condensed History

Basically the place that laid the foundations for modern prisons worldwide!

And a mock up of how Al Capone would have spent his time here

That place is seriously grim. Love the history haha. Thanks for posting it, can't get into the US so not gonna see it myself! ;)

Love this place, been a couple of times now. They are on about making the hospital area safe enough to allow visitors into in the near future. One entire wing of the prison was converted into a hospital that was miles better equipped as a facility than many of the regional hospitals in the city at the time.

They've done this well, could have restored it to what it was like at the time but I love how they left it unrestored. If Im ever back in Philly i'd definitely go back, any further additions would be a bonus

It is an amazing monument as it is standing unrestored but in 'managed decay' as such. Right now you can only see one of the former operating theatres in the hospital wing at specific times, but it is worth waiting around to see.

Both times I have been there I spent on my own without the audio guide, the second time I went was a rainy weekday morning just after they had opened for the day and I saw almost nobody around the entire time I was there which was fabulous.
