I was lucky and got permission to have a look around this old government building.
Later in the year the government offices occupying this site will vacate to new buildings, leaving this site empty.
So far there have been no real firm ideas what to do with this site in the future.
This building is a great example of the effective blending of Eastern and Western design styles all nicely
blended into one building. Designed by the Hong Kong based Palmer and Turner company, the building was
completed in 1940, just two years before the Japanese rode in on their great war machines, the humble bicycle.
During the fall of Singapore this building took some direct artillery hits and a good dose of spattering from
shrapnel and machine gun fire. Much of this war damage can still be seen on nearly every exterior wall.
The Japanese actually used the main tower as an observation post, directing their troops and artillery up
Bukit Timah road in Singapore.
