Tonight (Friday September 12th) I watched my new DVD. A favourite film of mine from the seventies; "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". As we sat down to watch the opening scenes of the most famous "patient" (aka Jack Nicholson) arriving at the asylum, I turned to my 18 year old son (who had never seen the film before) "you know all these derelict asylums I research, and look at pictures of on the web? Well, they look exactly like that place! They've got it spot on!" It wasn't until watching the second DVD which featured the making of the film that I learnt that the Historic J Building of the Oregon State Hospital (OSH) was used as the set of the famous movie. No wonder it appeared authentic ;)

Afterwards, I thought I'd research the OSH online. How weird, how *very* weird that I should then find a recent bulletin which states that the old hospital is deemed dangerous and is to be demolished soon. Even more weird is that the last public tours are to be on Saturday September 13th! It's just so ironic that after all these years (30 or so) since I last saw the film, I happen to watch it on the night before it closes it's doors permanently. Unless the preservationists are successful, there's another bit of history gone, from a medical and Hollywood point of view
