The tunnel de Saint-Martin-La-Blache was part of a huge project to connect Barcelonnette to the French rail network. The engineering works started around 1910, and finished only after the WWI. After countless years of wasted efforts and money, the whole project was finally canceled in 1941. The darkness of the tunnel was then used to grow mushrooms, but the access is now free.

The tunnel is 1662 meters long (official sources). A sign on the West side reads 1600 meters, and its evil twin on the East side claims 1730 meters: they are almost exact on average!
