Sub-title: Mysterious Sites, Deserted Villages and Forgotten Places of Great Britain and Ireland
By: Wynford Vaughan-Thomas and Michael Hayles
Pub:1992
ISBN 1 85648 080 1

"Dwellings, villages, places of worship, castles and work places have, with the passage of time, decayed and blended into the surrounding countryside. Covering a period of time from 2000 BC to the present century, they all retain a certain atmosphere, mystery and secrecy."

Although this was first published in 1980 and some of the information may be out of date, it's still an interesting book, containing reports of little known sites. Some of them are known to us, such as Powder Mills on Dartmoor and Hallsands in Devon, but there are also some oddities, including a charcoal burning site in the lake District, a deserted jetty on the Aran Islands and a more modern-day abandoned homestead where a couple tried and failed to live self-sufficiently.
Some places I don't recall coming across before...Killhope Wheel and some old coke ovens in County Durham, Old Gang Smelt Mill in Swaledale, Yorkshire and Greenburn Beck Lead Mine in Cumbria. Lots of castles, hillforts, standing stones and other cool stuff, most of which is in Scotland and Ireland. Some interesting things in Anglesey such as Parys Mountain Copper Mine.
The photos are in B&W and aren't that clear for detail, which is a shame. Not sure if it's worth buying so it may be as well to check it out at the library first. I found my copy in my bookcase...bought it many years ago and totally forgotten I had it!
Enjoy. :)

The Kilhope wheel is still there. It is a tourist attraction now with lots to see. If you are up this way it may be of interest.

The book sounds like an interesting read. The more I dig around the more I find up here. I'll never run out!

Cheers guys. I wasn't even sure if it was still in print, tbh. Perhaps I should've checked first!
That's interesting about the Kilhope Wheel, Sausage...with an older book it's uncertain whether some of this stuff is still about.
Hope it's of some use. :)
