I went to look at the big house, knowing it to be nearly abandoned, and on the at risk register, but found that there is a resident caretaker (who takes good care of all the grounds, and tries to stop the leaks apparently) who lives there with his dog. Explore over before it began!
But I then discovered that there is a derelict 60’s built chapel at the back with fairly easy access. The mansion had been used by nuns as a reform school for delinquent girls in the 50’’s and 60’s (interesting for the neighboring farmer who would find the girls taking care of business hidden in the bushes)
The chapel looks like it was built in the 60’s, concrete walls, and flat roof which has rotted completely leaving the building covered by little more than a sieve. (compare this to the mansion itself, built around the 1700’s, and with a roof that is only just starting to leak, mainly due to neglect, and lack of maintenance) The building is full of light though, provided by the large number of stained glass panels set into the walls. The pulpit appears to be a huge lump of concrete in the middle of the room . . . nice???
This is not likely to be around much longer. The owner is applying for permission to knock it down and build flats, converting the mansion at the same time.
