1. The History
Won’t do the history bit as I’ve done it before for my previous visit back in November 2015. You can find it here:

Loxley chapel- November 2015

I’ll up-date the history for recent event. Sealed for a long time, the chapel became unsealed and a number of reports on urbex sites started to appear. Sadly the local pond-life got in and started smashing the place up. Things went from bad to worse when flames ripped through the church in the early hours of Wednesday August 17th last year. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called out at around 3am when they dispatched three fire engines. The fire-fighters put out the flames by about 7am but the place was a burnt out shell by that point.

2. The Explore
I remember hearing the news about this place burning down while I was on my holidays last summer. Been sort of putting this one off as I knew what I’d find having seen other reports post the fire. Felt a wave of sadness wash over me when I saw the chapel a burnt-out wreck. It makes it worse when it’s a place of worship. How would you feel if the place that your loved ones were buried and commemorated was burnt down by local yobbos? It could have been all so different if the then owners (The Haighs) had not managed to buy the place and instead it had been purchased by a local scout group who wanted to use the building rather than leave it abandoned. For me it was the classic 'leave it unsecured and a mystery fire will start' job. Do local yobs really go out at 3am in the morning hell-bent on arson? For me something doesn't add up. English Heritage are preparing to do a report on the future of the Chapel but with the land acquired by private property developers you can sort of guess the rest.

3. The Pictures

A few of the overgrown graveyard first:

It’s pretty grim inside:

And not much remains. The old iron pillars remain steadfast however:

Some wall plaques have been removed:

But this one remains in situ:
