Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

The history

Built in 1841 for a reported cost of £160. The church was eventually closed in September 1993 due to the excessive costs of repairing the building. However, a local pressure group was formed to campaign for its reopening, which happened six months later. The congregation then moved into the adjoining school whilst around £60,000 of renovations took place. The church was rededicated in November 1999. Disused since 2016.

The explore

A beautifully preserved chapel that sits to the SE of the town centre... It's understood that the congregation were ferried to the church on weekends as most were unable to make the journey... but the elderly driver recently retired due to ill health which as left the chapel disused since 2016... Additionally the costings to repair the boiler outweigh demand which signals the end of the chapel in it's current form. It's understood that a transfer of use from chapel to community outsourcing projects is on the cards... So with this in mind we decided to pay the old chapel a visit. It's not often we have come across a religious building that is as beautifully preserved as this... the upkeep here is truly astounding. An original organ with Alter... polished floors and pews that looked like the day they were installed. also of note was the immaculate nature of the embroidery work which we presume would have been carried out by congregations new and old... Hopefully these will find new homes and will be as cared for their have they have been here.

I’ve been in the unhappy position of being the last organist ever to play an instrument when my church was decommissioned. It’s a very poignant moment, switching the blower off for the last time. An instrument that you’ve loved, and battled sometimes, for the better part of twenty years suddenly is silent. Going back two years later, the wildly fluctuating temperatures had caused keys to delaminate and stop knobs to fall off. The metal fairies had attacked it and stolen the metal pipes for scrap, presumably. A shame since some of them were beautifulin tone. I’m skrry I went back in a way. I like derelict churches a lot, just not my own. This one, however is lovely. The organ has suffered, as they all do, of course, but at least it looks intact pipe wise. I hope, someone saves it. Too many are ending up,in skips. Thank you for posting this.

There was originally one in wellingborough prison chapel that I recently visited. My mate in charge of the demo got in touch with the people who serviced it last & another company to see if he could GIVE them it... No one wanted it & it was scrapped!
Seems mad to me, but I guess its like pianos... theres always a piano left at a derp!
