An impresive place this, which I hope will be restored once they sort out the house.
Apparently never consicrated, as the Bishop of Durham wanted to charge a fee & Deleval didnt want to pay

Better view of the front from the Ha ha. It seems it was originally accessed from a draw bridge, as I found signs of the hindges

Beat me to it. :) I know it has been covered on this forum but no pics of the crypt were shown. I was going to take BigLoada for a picnic here!

As kids we would go into the crypt with candles and freak ourselves out. I remember the red bricks everywhere on the floor too but I had never looked up at the ceiling - wish I had cos it is beautiful.

Some nice shots there - thanks for sharing. :)

I really must get myself down here to have a look at this place. We've driven past it a million times on the way for Seaton Sluice Fish & Chips; Yummy.

Another one of those places that I've been to as a kid but never gone back as an adult when I can actually appreciate it properly!

The place has always impressed me. I didnt take photos of the main interior this time but I'm sure I have some here somewhere. I'll dig them out.

Oh yes, Seaton Sluice chips!!!!...thoough on this trip, I had to go to the ones near the old gun emplacement by Blyth...which were ok ;)

Ever since it was first reported on here (or maybe somewhere else) I've been meaning to have a gander myself, but never got round to it. Nice pics and impressive building.

The best fish and chips in Northumberland:)

Sausage was just on about this place the other night. I think I will be doing a night shoot here soon. Its great. Have you checked out the ruins of Starlight Castle nearby?

Oh yes, been to Starlight castle but theres not a lot to see there. Nice enough though and if I recall rightly, if you keep going up the river, there are a few remains of old mills etc

Aye you can just about see where the old mill was but theres nowt left really. What we have to find is the old tunnels under where the bottleworks was. Now that would be quite a find but I reckon they are sealed up and buried now.

I must have blinked and missed it. God I'm getting old and forgetful....

The chips may be nice but the asking price isn't! I vowed never to go back after the last time I was there.
Try the chippy next to the Spartans ground. Quality and if a certain member of staff is on and you chat her up she just piles the food high.

Sorry, off topic!

I remember as a kid the old mill and it was fab. Very olde world and ruinous. I think there is more to the whole dene than meets the eye.

Not really a castle, it was more of a folly that looked like a castle. Built by Francis Delaval in 1750 as a wager that he could build a home for his lady friend in one day. Used to look great judging from old paintings but theres only a wall left now. Here it is:

Thanks BigLoada, is there a track from the Dene through to it? Might have a looksee next time I can persuade the GF to take a walk along that way.

Sure. Look at the online Ordnance Survey map. The footpath goes right past, I sometimes ride my mountain bike through there. Call me if you fancy a look, I live next to the Dene but more towards Seaton Delaval and I drive a car so transport is cool.
