Whitefields mansions, Cambridgeshire. October 2010

I have known about this site for some time now but have never got round to having a look around. After a bit of a nudge I finally had a look round and what a site it is!

Here’s a little bit of history for you….With thanks to UrbanX :)

As local legend goes the wealthy owner (whom I believe to be a retired master of St. Johns College at Cambridge University) had a ding-dong with his partner and started a bit of a burn up. Unfortunately due to it’s remote location, and access, the fire brigade didn’t arrive in time to save Whitefields. The mansion (what was left of it) was unceremoniously bulldozed into the swimming pool!

The site has a couple of features. There’s the mansion bulldozed into the swimming pool as mentioned above. There’s also an existing mansion definitely in need of a little tlc, A small guest/summer house, 2 pill boxes/bunkers, a newt population and what appears to be a small shed sunk into the ground so a few things to have a look at!

We guess the site was properly abandoned over 20 years ago.

Was quite a nice explore. Even though the site had the awful fire it had quite a nice feel to it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a building being taken over by nature so much it really is beautiful. One thing I did come across which I thought was a little unusual was a tent so would appear someone is camping on the site so something to think about as well as the newts if you are visiting.

Because the mansion has been taken over by nature so much it has been difficult for me to take pictures that really give you an idea of the place.

You might want to take a look at an earlier report by UrbanX that has some good photos of the place before nature really started to reclaim the mansion! http://www.derelictplaces.co.uk/main/showthread.php?t=3722&highlight=whitefields+mansion

Ok here are a few pictures for you :)

Thanks to UrbanX for all the help and info on this one.

Wow! Where is it?
Can we have the exact address please, me and my mates all want to go there for a rave - etc. ;):p

Nice one! Thanks for linking to my original post. There's so many odd little outbuildings to the mansion too. It's crazy how quickly nature is reclaiming the houses.

(Glad you've kept the location to a minimum too, there are still crested newt habitats on the site)

Fabulous photos, Em. I love this place...a huge, soft spot for it...and it's great to see how nature's taken it over even more.
Cheers very much for posting. :)

I hope Em_UX doesn’t mind my piggybacking on her report! I do already have a report of this place on here, although it’s now old and closed!

This is my fourth visit top this fantastic site, as always you always notice something new with every visit.

I have a detailed history of the site on my own site, including paintings made from the site. As well as the future of the site, including the architect drawings. Shameless plug: www.urbanxphotography.co.uk/whitefields

Visited with the lovely Em_UX (Lovely to meet you BTW)

The first house and all of its possessions were unceremoniously bulldozed into the swimming pool:

I remember one year after getting back from Glastonbury, my bath looked similar to this:

As well as the two mansions there is also a summer cottage, which has been completely enveloped in nature. I believe all of the tiles have been reclaimed, as they are nowhere to be found on site, and the battens remain nearly in tact:

Upstairs in the summer house (I’m sure Em_UX has a comical pic of me climbing up here) :p

Location still classified due to the delicate situation with the wildlife on the site.

Cheers Foxy. This visit may be my last - The hotel replacing it has full planning permission, which has a 3 year window of validity. There is evidence of builders on site now. Soon the lush grounds supporting everything from newts, to albino foxes will be replaced with a 119 space carpark, and flat 65ft concrete facades.

A couple of pictures from my 2nd visit this time with Urban_X. Was great to meet you too :D
