    Default Care Home Oct 2012

Designed by architect Sir John Sulman.
The 132-year-old mansion, was originally the home of William Garland Soper –
traditionally referred to as the town's founding father.
The 20-bedroom property served Marie Curie hospice for 47 years, until it was closed amid huge controversy
in 2009. Locals were unable to get the house listed so its future looks bleak. Very sad indeed.
(Picture below) The popular Edwardian game of croquet is being played on the immaculate lawns in summer 1906.
A tennis court is market out on the right in front of the conservatory. This postcard was indicating x ‘Auntie’, was
sent to South Africa where the Soper family had profitable business interests.

Thats sad to hear it's been flattened, at least you got in and saw it. Good on you for getting out there and having a go.
Why go through a door when there's a perfectly good window?

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
