Location
East Devon's Jurassic Park!
Went for a very long walk today and came across these cottages. I almost walked past them but then I noticed the boarded up windows so looked again and saw that the garden was overgrown, so crossed the road to investigate further.
Took a few photos of the rear of the building then noticed that one of the doors was only closed by a bit of string over a nail. I walked in.
It had been converted at some point from two cottages to one, but there are still two sets of stairs leading upwards from each living room. There's plenty of stuff inside; old furniture, building supplies (rather ancient and obviously undisturbed for some time), rolled-up carpets and a stack of window frames with broken glass in them.
I began to go up one of the staircases but it was a bit dicey as they were very steep and covered in plaster rubble. Got to the third step up and took some pics from there and was about to go further when I noticed that the staircase was coming away from the wall.
Here are some photos. The rest are in the Gallery.

When I took this one I didn't notice that the fireplace contained an old lead range. It was very dim inside and didn't see it until I collected the prints and looked at them. Cool!

Wonderful plaster peel, a dusty alarm clock, cobwebs and a rather startled-looking me!

Good evenin' Foxy,

Nice pictures of these cottages -really charming (worth the long walk eh?) :)
Probably a wise move there to not attempt those stairs (unless they were held up with "sky hooks"!!
I always think that boarding up a place that's empty is like sticking a bit neon sign with flashing lights saying "hello to all chavs etc -this place is empty, please help yourself to pipes, slates, lead, fitting & fixtures etc.!!!
What is that funny looking object on the mantle piece? Those walls colours are so vibrant, even though it must have been painted years ago.
Thanks for sharing this little gem with us.

Ta for your comments, Lb. That thing is a small bale of wire netting, strangely enough. Yeah, I was bowled over by the colours. I would have liked to have stayed longer and get more pics but it was rather dark in there and I got a little spooked. I kept getting that feeling of someone standing behind me. Woooh!
Amazing that no-one's been in before as it was obviously undisturbed. But then again it's a tiny village and the road is a main through road so no chav behaviour there by the looks of it. :D

i do like this place, looks great. like the mirror image of you too. ;) And that old fire place reminds me of my grandads old fireplace, where he used to do all his cooking on it. that takes me back a bit.

Those stairs sound bad tho. loving the thickness of the walls. love old cottages, theres something about them.

Great photos, thanks foxy. (wish we had old cottages like this where i live. they all seem like boxes nowadays, much prefer these).

Cheers,

:) Sal

Cheers, Sal.
Funnily enough I'm beginning to think I'm not photogenic because they always come out looking rather severe, yet I've got a smiley sort of face. Weird!
Yeah, I was so chuffed with this find as I really like old cottages too. And it's unusual too because they're nearly always snapped up by property developers or people hoping to 'buy into' the country. My guess is that whoever owns them/it began to do them up then ran out of money, or maybe someone died and there's a problem with the will or something.
Cheers

Hope in time it gets renovate, would hate to see them knock it down. Too many lovely places like this get knocked down, and those tiny little boxes get put up, or, god forbid, upmarket apartments. :skull::sick::cry:

Hope they do it up sensitively (if you know what i mean).

Definitely! I think it'll be safe though. The outside looks as if it's been well-maintained structurally, which is why I nearly walked past.

There's a few in the Gallery. I took a photo of the garden but it wasn't spectacular as it was just a bank of brambles.
Cheers

Ah, your mates -were these brambles as friendly as those at Warner's Camp?:D;)
